The adaptation period is often a source of stress for parents/caregivers. For this reason, it’s worth knowing a few basic principles that can help parents and children better prepare for the transition to daycare, thus reducing feelings of uncertainty.
An individual approach is of utmost importance when it comes to each child embarking on their journey in daycare. Every child has unique needs, and as such, their adaptation process might differ from the rest of the group.
At “First Steps,” we prioritize an individual approach for each adaptation. On the first day, we spend an hour in the company of a parent/caregiver. Based on initial conversations and observations, we plan the course of subsequent adaptation days, ensuring they are as comfortable as possible for the child.
So, how can you prepare for the adaptation period?
Familiarize yourself with the daily schedule and the approximate timings of activities organized in the daycare. Before the adaptation begins, it’s beneficial to introduce a similar daily rhythm at home for your little one.
Feel free to ask caregivers and management questions before and during the adaptation process. Share your uncertainties and concerns.
Avoid expecting your child’s adaptation process to mirror that of familiar children or group mates. Each child’s adaptation journey is unique, and it’s important to understand that extending it if needed is perfectly acceptable!
Acknowledge your own emotions. It’s natural for parents to feel uncertain in this situation. However, try not to display negative emotions in the presence of your child. Maintaining a positive attitude helps your child feel secure and confident in the new environment.
Bid farewell to your child gently and calmly, using clear and truthful communication about when you’ll be reunited. For older children, inform them about joining the group and the expected pickup time from the daycare.
Allow your child space to explore! Permit your little one to independently decide which activities they’d like to engage in.
Trust us! It’s crucial to have the assurance that the place you’re entrusting your child is safe and nurturing. The caregivers at the daycare invest a great deal of effort to create a warm, family-like atmosphere and a comfortable space for children to explore, learn, and thrive.
